Still covered? Warranty extensions every used-car buyer should know

When a carmaker finds a widespread problem, it often extends the warranty on just that part instead of issuing a recall. Most extensions follow the car, not the owner, so a used buyer can be covered too, but they're counted from the original sale date, and dealers rarely mention them. This page lists the big ones, whether they're still active, and how to check a specific car.

Last checked October 30, 2026, against manufacturer bulletins. Terms shown are US programs unless noted. Canadian coverage can differ, so confirm with a dealer.

Expired doesn't mean irrelevant. If a known, expensive problem is no longer covered, that's a fair reason to negotiate the price down, or to walk away.

Check the VIN on the car you're looking at

See where it was built and its model year, then check its title history for salvage, flood, odometer and theft records.

How to check a specific car

  1. Get the VIN, and ask the seller when the car was first sold. Most extensions count from that date, not from the model year.
  2. Call or email a franchised dealer for that brand with the VIN. Ask: "Are there any open recalls, campaigns or warranty extensions on this VIN?" Their system shows it in seconds.
  3. For Hyundai and Kia, also ask whether the knock sensor software update and the anti-theft upgrade have been done. Without the update, the lifetime engine coverage may not apply.
  4. Check recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls (US) or with Transport Canada. Recalls are different from extensions: they're mandatory safety fixes, always free, with no expiry.
  5. Keep the paperwork. Extensions usually require that the problem matches the bulletin and the car wasn't neglected, so service records help.

Why dealers and sellers rarely mention this

A warranty extension isn't a recall, so the carmaker usually mails only the owners on file. A second or third owner may never hear about it. Hyundai and Kia's knock sensor update, for example, was a "product improvement campaign", which is why some used buyers have discovered too late that it was never installed. Dealers selling a different brand have no reason to look it up for you.

Using this when you buy

  • Active coverage adds value. A 2019 CR-V with head gasket coverage until 2029 is a safer buy than an equivalent car without it.
  • Coverage that's about to end means a known problem is about to become your bill. Ask the seller to get it inspected under warranty first.
  • Coverage that has expired on a known issue is negotiating leverage. Get the repair quoted and take it off the price.

Questions

Does a warranty extension transfer to a used car buyer?

Usually yes. Most are tied to the VIN and count from the original sale date. Some, like Hyundai and Kia's lifetime engine coverage, have conditions such as a required software update.

What's the difference between a recall and a warranty extension?

A recall fixes a safety defect and is always free. An extension covers a specific non-safety problem for a set time or distance, then ends.

Is the Honda head gasket extension valid in Canada?

The announced program is American Honda's. Honda Canada often runs similar programs, so ask a Canadian Honda dealer to check the VIN.
