Used Toyota Corolla: years to avoid and what to check

The Corolla has fewer problem years than almost any car, which is why it's a popular first used car. The years to look at more carefully are 2005–2008 (an engine computer that could crack, causing stalling and harsh shifts, recalled), and 2009–2010 (steering complaints that led to a class action, plus the era's accelerator-pedal recalls). The 2.4L XRS of 2009–2011 was also in Toyota's oil-consumption program. Most issues were fixed by recall, so the key is checking that the work was done.

2005–2008: the stalling recall

In 2010 Toyota recalled 2005–2008 Corolla and Matrix models with the 1.8L engine and two-wheel drive, because the circuit board in the engine control module could crack. CNN reported that regulators and Toyota had received as many as 1,100 stalling complaints. The fix, a replacement module, is free. Most cars got it years ago, but run the VIN to be sure, especially on a car that's had several owners.

2009–2011: the ones to look closer at

The 2009–2010 Corolla was the subject of a class action alleging its electric power steering made the car wander on the highway. These years were also part of Toyota's broad 2009–2010 accelerator-pedal and floor-mat recalls. The sportier XRS, which used the 2.4L 2AZ engine, was included in Toyota's ZE7 oil-consumption program. The ordinary 1.8L Corolla wasn't.

Newer Corollas: what to check

From 2014, most US Corollas switched to a CVT automatic. We didn't find a widespread documented defect on 2014-and-later Corollas in the sources we reviewed, but a CVT does like regular fluid service, so ask for records. The biggest risks with a newer Corolla are usually its own history, not the model: rideshare and fleet use, unreported accidents, and flood damage. Those are exactly what a history check is for.

What to check on any used Corolla

  • Cold start: it starts promptly with no warning lights left on (2005–2008).
  • Highway: it holds a straight line without constant correction (2009–2010).
  • CVT (2014+): smooth pickup from a stop, no shudder or whining.
  • Use history: Corollas are fleet and rideshare favorites, so check for rental or taxi use and high mileage per year.
  • Rust: rocker panels and rear wheel arches in salt-belt areas.

Whatever the year, run the VIN before you go. Check the title history and the recall status in the US at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or in Canada with Transport Canada. Open recalls are fixed free at a dealer. Then check our Still covered? tracker for warranty extensions that might still apply.

Questions

What is the worst Toyota Corolla year?

There's no truly bad one, but 2005–2008 (engine computer recall) and 2009–2010 (steering complaints and pedal recalls) had the most documented issues.

Do Corollas burn oil?

The ordinary 1.8L generally doesn't. The 2009–2011 XRS with the 2.4L engine was part of Toyota's oil-consumption program.

Is a high-mileage Corolla a good buy?

Often, if it's been maintained. Check the history for fleet or rideshare use and get an inspection.
