How to tell if a used car in Canada came from the US

Look for a Canadian import compliance label from the RIV in the driver's door frame, a speedometer with mph as the main scale, and a UVIP showing a recent first Ontario registration on an older car. If it was in the US, check its US title history, because a US flood or salvage brand may not appear in Canadian records.

Why it matters

A car imported from the US arrives with whatever happened to it there: a flood, a salvage auction, a rolled-back odometer. Canadian records such as Ontario's UVIP start when the car was first registered here, so the earlier chapter can be missing. That US chapter is exactly what a US title history covers.

Signs a car came from the US

  • An RIV compliance label in the driver's door frame. Cars imported through Canada's Registrar of Imported Vehicles get one after passing inspection.
  • The speedometer reads mph first, or has a metric overlay added.
  • The UVIP shows a first Ontario registration years after the model year.
  • Paperwork such as a US title, a CBSA import form, or US service receipts.
  • The seller mentions it came from an auction or "down south".

The first character of the VIN isn't a reliable sign. Plenty of cars sold new in Canada were built in the US and start with 1, 4 or 5.

What to check before you buy

  1. Run the US title history by VIN for salvage, flood or junk brands and odometer readings.
  2. Check its Ontario brand status on the UVIP. Rebuilt cars coming into Ontario from elsewhere are downgraded to Salvage and need a structural inspection before they can be driven.
  3. Look for flood signs if it came from a hurricane-prone state.
  4. Get a pre-purchase inspection as usual.

Questions

Is a car imported from the US bad?

Not at all. Many are fine. The risk is history that happened in the US and didn't follow the car into Canadian records.

Where is the RIV label?

Usually in the driver's door frame, near the manufacturer's label.

Will a Canadian report show US history?

Not always. CARFAX Canada, for example, says it doesn't check titles or liens in US states. A US title history covers that gap.
